Travel Insurance Claims: How the Process Actually Works
Most travel insurance claims fail or get delayed not because the incident was not covered, but because the paperwork was not collected at the time it happened. Knowing the process before you travel makes a real difference.
Notify the insurer immediately
Most policies require you to inform the insurer or their assistance helpline as soon as reasonably possible after a medical emergency, theft, or major delay — not after you return home. Save the helpline number and policy number somewhere accessible offline.
Collect documentation at the time
For medical claims, keep original bills, doctor notes, and diagnosis reports. For baggage loss or delay, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport. For trip cancellations, keep the cancellation notice and proof of the cost incurred.
Submit the claim promptly on return
Once home, submit the claim form along with all supporting documents within the window specified in your policy, typically 30 days. Keep photocopies of everything you submit, and follow up with a reference number if the insurer provides one.
