eSIM vs Physical Travel SIM: Which Should You Carry Abroad?
Staying connected abroad used to mean hunting for a local SIM counter at the airport. Today, an eSIM can be activated before you even board, but a physical SIM still has its place depending on your phone and your destination.
What an eSIM gets you
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile you install through a QR code, usually purchased and activated online before departure. There is no physical card to lose or swap, and you can often keep your Indian number active on your primary SIM slot while using data on the eSIM.
When a physical SIM still makes sense
Older phones and some regional phone models do not support eSIM. A physical SIM can also be cheaper for very long stays in one country, since local physical SIMs are sold directly by carriers at competitive local rates.
Check compatibility and coverage first
Before choosing either option, confirm your phone supports eSIM (if going that route) and check that the provider has good coverage in every country on your itinerary, not just your first stop — this matters most for multi-country trips.
