How to Check If Your Phone Supports an eSIM Before You Travel

FxPertise Team20 May 20263 min read

eSIM support depends on both your phone model and, in some cases, whether your carrier has locked the eSIM function even on a supported device. Checking both before you buy saves a frustrating scramble at the airport.

Check your device settings

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for an "EID" entry — its presence generally indicates eSIM support (available from iPhone XS onward). On Android, check Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs for an "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead" option.

Confirm it is carrier-unlocked

Some phones purchased on a carrier contract have eSIM functionality disabled even though the hardware supports it. If your settings do not show an eSIM option despite having a supported model, contact your carrier to confirm whether it has been locked.

Test the QR activation before you fly

Most eSIM providers let you install the profile in advance and only activate the data plan once you land. Installing it a day or two before departure, while still on home WiFi, means you can confirm it worked without relying on your final hours of prep time.
